NEW HAVEN, CT – On an emotional day at SCSU, the Southern Connecticut State University Owls Gymnastics Team held their home opener as Cornell Big Red, Brockport Golden Eagles, and the Springfield College Pride also competed in a Sunday quad meet.

The meet was designated as Melanie Coleman Day to celebrate the life of the SCSU gymnast who tragically lost her life during training in November of 2019. The team honored Coleman with a banner display, a video tribute, and by standing in a line at march in with a space open where she would have stood.

Division 1 Cornell scored a 189.650 on the day, Division 2 SCSU posted a 187.025, while Division 3 Brockport compiled a 186.450 and Springfield obtained a 185.800.

Maci Prescott of Cornell took the Vault crown by scoring a 9.750. Hannah Stahlbrodt of SCSU, Jamie Sklenar of Brockport, and Samantha Henry of Cornell all had 9.725s for the second highest scores of the day. Nicole Jackson of Brockport’s 9.675, and 9.625s from Emily Balasco of SCSU and Alexis Castellaneta of Brockport rounded out the top scores. Ali Rushlow had Springfield’s best score of 9.550.

The Uneven Bars was a rough event across the board, but Amy Shen of Cornell took first with a 9.625, as Amy Eck of the Golden Eagles and Evelyn Patient of the Big Red scored 9.6s. Jacqueline Kutcher of SCSU and Gabbi Gare of Brockport had 9.45s, Cassidy Girolamo of Southern had a 9375 and Tori Sipes of Springfield led her team with a 9.275.

Miranda Lund of Cornell put up a big 9.8 on the Balance Beam, as her teammate Valerie Aubley, and SCSU’s Stahlbrodt and Bianca Leon all had 9.775s. Izzy Herczeg, also of Cornell scored a 9.75, and fellow Big Red member Madison Smith tallied a 9.675. Alexis Castellaneta led her team with a 9.625, Payton Murphy of Cornell was her team’s fifth counted score thanks to a 9.6 and Springfield’s Sara King had that score as well to lead her team.

On the Floor, Smith took the crown with her 9.75 as her teammate Claire Haklik had a 9.7, followed by Stahlbrodt and Springfield’s Taylor Campagnone who both had 9.65s. Also, Kyra Figurelli and Castellaneta each had 9.625s for Brockport.

Stahlbrodt would win the All Around thanks to a 38.3 as Girolamo posted a 37.250 and Lund had a 37.150.

After the meet SCSU Gymnast’s Keylea Brothers and Hannah Stahlbrodt spoke about the meet and Melissa Coleman.
