WINDSOR, CT- The visiting Maine Mayhem picked up a 32-0 win over the New England Nightmare in Women’s Football Alliance Division 3 action on a windy Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter began with the Nightmare effectively stunting a Mayhem possession leading to a very short punt and good field possession for the Nightmare. However, after getting into a 4th and long situation, a pass ended up in Maine’s Audrey Grinnel’s hands and she took it all the way back for the touchdown. The resulting extra point was no good but Maine had a 6-0 lead.
After a Nightmare possession, the Mayhem were in a good place on the field and Hannah Fye took it up the side on a run for a touchdown. The extra point sailed wide of the uprights but the Mayhem had a 12-0 advantage.
NE couldn’t score the next time with the ball, and Maine got it back. Fye returned a punt and the team drove including a pass from Maine QB Theresa Hendrix to Alicia Jeffords. Fye was able to run it into the end zone afterward. The kick was good and it was 19-0.
The next time New England had the ball the Nightmare completed passes left and right but a penalty would turn the ball over on downs after the drive faltered before half time.
It should be noted that the Nightmare were vocal in their dispute with many of the penalties called during the game including even whether the correct ones were applied. Though Maine also had plenty called on them.
When the game resumed New England was stymied by the Maine defense including a sack from Haylee Graves. The Mayhem drove and Stephanie Ginn ran it in for a TD and the kick was good for a 26 lead.
New England had no intention of giving up and kept fighting but had to give up the ball on downs. The Mayhem were held by the Nightmare defense, but on the next possession, Ginn stripped an opponent of the ball and ran it back for another touchdown and a 32-0 score.
The Nightmare used the waning minutes of the game to try to drive to break the shut out but were unable to put the ball in the end zone in time.
With the win, Maine rises to 1-0, and the Nightmare drop to 0-1. Both teams return to action April 22nd, as the Nightmare travel to the New York Knockout, and the Mayhem will face the Montreal Blitz.
