Bees Come Back from 6 Runs Down, Win 7-6

By David F. Pendrys [Official Atlantic League Box Score]

NEW BRITAIN, CT- The New Britain Bees came back from a 6-0 deficit to win over the Somerset Patriots in dramatic fashion Wednesday night. New Britain’s Brian Dupra held Somerset scoreless despite allowing some base runners until the fourth.

Somerset’s Trayvon Robinson opened the inning with a single and stole second later. The Bees would get two outs, though Robinson would get to third. Dupra walked Scott Kelly and Kelly also stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Mycal Jones followed this lacing a single to center field to drive in both runners.

In the fifth the real damage would come as Dupra gave up a single to Eric Farris and walked Brad Snyder. The Bees went to the pen at this point bringing in Brandon Fry who promptly walked Bryan LaHair to load the bases and set the table for Robinson to launch a shot off the left field foul pole for the grand slam and a 6-0 lead.

Somerset starter Brian Gorski no-hit the the Bees through five but Jovan Rosa broke it with a home run over the left field fence. That would be the only hit and run Gorski surrendered as Kyler Newby replaced him in the seventh. Gorski however picked up seven strikes out and four walks during his six innings of work.

The seventh would be a critical inning as Jon Griffin would single and steal second base, though the Bees picked up two outs in the process. This mattered little as Anthony Hewitt doubled in Griffin. Mike Thomas was brought in to replace Newby, but he gave up a double to James Skelton which plated Hewitt and the lead was cut to 6-3. Thomas than walked Steve Carillo and Rosa to load the bases.

Thomas proceeded to walk Craig Maddox, throwing four balls in a row after strike, which brought Skelton in from third. Connor Little was hastily summoned from the bullpen to try to put the fire out, but he would not succeed either. With two strikes on him, Jonathan Roof fouled the ball off three times before launching it to right field to score two more runs and tie things up.

Anthony Marzi had relieved Fry in the top of the seventh and he pitched two scoreless innings to get to Craig Stem in the ninth. Stem and later Shawn Gilblair would hold off the Patriots in the top of the frame and Somerset sent out Brandon Sisk to try to get the clubs to extra innings.

Rosa was walked to open the bottom of the ninth and Brandon Chaves replaced him on the base paths. Maddox put the ball in play but Chaves was thrown out at second, though Maddox made it to first without incident. Sisk struck out Jonathan Roof to put the second out on the board, but with a two-two count, Michael Crouse smacked the ball into the left field corner. Maddox raced home from first beating an errant throw and the Bees took the seven to six win. The Bees are now 23-21 and the Patriots sit at 25 and 21.
