Soccer: Hartford & Yale Play to A Draw

by David F. Pendrys [Eyewitness account verified with Official Hartford Hawks Box Score]

WEST HARTFORD, CT- The Yale Bulldogs and Hartford Hawks Women’s Soccer teams proved to be evenly matched Thursday night at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The result of the energetic effort of the Bulldogs and Hawks after two overtimes was a 1-1 tie.

Caroline Massey scored Hartford’s lone goal when she ended up with the ball close in to the Yale net and dribbled by Bulldog keeper Rachel Ames to score at 38:34. Sidney Spremullo helped set up the goal and picked up the assist. Yale responded as the standout freshman Michelle Alozie responded to the scrum around teammate Ally Grossman’s corner kick and got it past Hartford’s Jessica Jurg at 42:18.

That would be it for the scoring though as both Ames and Jurg were strong in net, and also the team’s defenses thwarted many efforts. Jurg made 4 saves on the day, and Ames made 8. Hartford took 19 shots, and Yale took 11, with the Hawks putting 9 on goal and Yale putting 5 on the net. Hartford did get more attempts in the Yale zone but they were rarely fantastic opportunities. Yale, while spending less time did manage a few solid chances, but there were few.

The dangerous Julia Carr was held scoreless in the effort despite taking 1 less shot on goal herself than Yale had the whole game, though Ames was ready for her. Fellow offensive threat Aaliyah Ingram took 4 shots but only 1 landed on goal.

Hartford is now 5-1-1, and Yale is 3-3-1.
