BRIDGEPORT, CT- In game 2 of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon between Wagner and Sacred Heart, the Seahawks rebounded from their game 1 loss, to narrowly down the Pioneers in extra innings. Max Schmardel was on the starter for Wagner but would leave with the game tied. Jesus Medina, who played in the infield the game 1, of SHU gave up the 4 Wagner runs while pitching 7.1 innings before finally giving away to Matt Cooney. Steven Bloodworth picked up the win in relief.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Ted Shaw doubled hitting the ball into the bullpen. Keith Klebart grounded out advancing Shaw, and Dan Schock smacked a grounder off the third baseman’s glove into the outfield scoring Shaw and earning a double. That would be it for the inning though.
Wagner responded in the 3rd, Dan Wasilick was walked, and advanced by a Trey Nicosia sacrifice bunt. Nick Mascelli hit a grounder but the fielder mishandled it allowing him to reach base, and Wasilick moved to third. Ben Ruta singled scoring Wasilick, and getting Mascelli to third. Nick Dini grounded out scoring Mascelli. The inning ended though when Wagner flied out of the infield, but SHU Shortstop Zack Short hustled to make a good play.
The scoring ceased until the sixth. With one out, Dini made it to first when a grounder was not caught at first. Tommy Mazurkiewicz bunted Dini to second. Anthony Godino singled in Dini. Sacred Heart ended the inning with runners moving, a liner caught at third was quickly thrown to first to double up the runner.
In the bottom of the 6th, Short walked, and Victor Sorrento singled moving him to third. This brought in Bloodworth. Shaw’s single drove in Short and Sorrento moved to third. PJ DeFilippo came in to pinch hit and grounded out scoring Sorrento to tie the game. The teams would not score in the 7th and went on to extra innings in the expected seven inning game.
In the top of the eighth, Mascelli opened the inning blooping the ball over first base. Ben Ruta singled sending Mascelli to third. Dini smacked the ball to right field, and Schock made a diving play to catch it, but Mascelli tagged up and scored. This ended Medina’s day and Cooney didn’t give up another run. SHU was unable to score in the bottom of the inning and that was that.
For Wagner, Ruta and Godino had 3 hits, and Dini 2 RBI. Shaw, DeFilipo and Shock each had a RBI for Sacred Heart.
