STATEN ISLAND, NY- After a decisive 13-1 victory in Game 1 over the Wagner Seahawks, the CCSU Blue Devils took game 2 of the double header in a closer affair Saturday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

In Game 2, Wagner sent Mike Adams to the mound, opposing him was Central’s Dominic Severino. The Blue Devils came up to bat in the top of the 1st and Adams got the first two outs of the inning thanks in part to first baseman Tommy Mazurkiewicz staying on the bag when a tough throw came his way for the first out of the game. With two outs however the Blue Devils struck hard. J.P. Sportman singled to left, then stole second. Adams walked Tyler McIntyre, and Chris Renzoni came up to bat. He hit a tricky popper to left but the Wagner fielder misplayed it and it dropped to the ground. With two outs Sportman and McIntyre were already on the run and scored as Renzoni picked up a double. He would later advance on a wild pitch to third. Josh Ingham came up to bat and knocked a ball to third but the Seahawk fielder couldn’t get it to first in time allowing Renzoni to score. Adams finally got out of the inning when the next batter flew to left, but CCSU was already up 3-0.

Wagner’s Ian Miller got to first base when his grounder to second was misplayed. Chris Smith singled to shallow Center advancing Miller, and Nick Dini was walked to load the bases with no outs. The next Wagner batter grounded into a double play but Miller scored and Smith advanced to third. Jayson Keel came up to bat, but Severino threw a pitch wild and Smith raced in. Keel then hit the ball to third but beat out the throw, and Ben Ruta walked in the continually dangerous inning. The next batter grounded to second and CCSU escaped further damage.

In the top of the third Sportman singled to left, and McIntyre doubled to right putting Sportman on third. After a CCSU strike out Ingham flied out to left, scoring Sportman. The next batter grounded to third, but CCSU was now up 4-2.

Wagner tried to respond. Dini hit a double and Chase Gray walked. Keel flied out, but Ruta’s single to left scored Dini. That would be it for Wagner though and the score was 4-3.

The scoring would cease, though Wagner would keep trying. In the bottom of the 5th Gray was on first with two outs. Keel came up to bat, and Central went to the bullpen replacing Severino with Brendyn Karinchak. Before a pitch was thrown Karinchak threw over to first catching Gray in a run down ending the inning. Central did nothing in the 6th and Keel returned to bat now facing Ingham who had moved to pitcher giving Keel his third pitcher in one at bat. He singled, and Ruta advanced him with a bunt. Ingham struck out the following batter, and the Seahawk following flew out to left. Central also did nothing in the top of the seventh to add insurance. Wagner came to bat in the bottom of the seventh for their last hope. Miller got to first due to a CCSU fielding mishap on a grounder. But with Smith at bat, Ingham picked Miller off and then proceeded to strike out Smith to end the game. CCSU had won with 4 runs and 6 hits to Wagner’s 3 runs on 8 hits, and their 1 error. Severino picked up his third win of the season to rise to 3-1, Adams his fifth loss to drop to 1-5 despite going the whole game.
