Men’s Hockey: Brown upsets Yale

When I arrived at Meehan Auditorium after covering the Gymnastics meet next door, the 2nd period was wrapping up. Brown and #1 Yale were in the midst of a 1 to 1 tie as the 2nd intermission came and went. But with both teams scuffling quite a lot, the penalty box was put to much use, and this included multiple Brown penalties in the third which gave Yale some power plays. Brian O’Neill used one to knock the puck past Brown’s keeper Mike Clemente at 6:46.  Brown survived two more penalties before Garnet Hathaway got the puck passed Yale’s Ryan Rondeau to tie it up at 13:06.  Two off setting penalties put the teams at 4 on 4, but not long after Brown was down a man again very late.

The Bears survived leaving about a minute to play. With overtime looming Harry Zolnierczyk got a break away, the crowd all rose to their feet, and as if it were a movie, shot it passed Rondeau with a 46 seconds left. Yale pulled the goalie but was unable to even it, and the win went Brown’s away. It’s rare to see as dramatic an ending as that one to a hockey game.
