So the first few weeks of the season are in the books in collegiate women’s volleyball. For many of the teams in the region the out of conference slate will be wrapped up soon and conference play will begin.
Just taking a look at several of the teams in the region so far that most of the coverage will center on. (Note some of the standings have not been updated completely.) Still a lot of volleyball left to play this season.

University of Connecticut Huskies (5-6 out of conference.)

The Huskies went 0-4 on a road trip to open the season (but brought two of those matches to a 3-2 score.), before returning home picking up 2 victories, and narrowly narrowly losing to TCU. They picked up a win at Harvard, a loss to Dayton, and two more wins on the road. They get four matches this week, the first is at home to Northeastern, and later they travel to one of UConn’s bitter rivals, Boston College for a tournament, consisting of BC in a Friday nightcap, and then Rhode Island and Hartford on Saturday. Big East play starts up the week following.

Boston College Eagles (7-1 out of conference)

Most of the ACC has a winning record, but the teams have yet to really get league play underway. BC lost the season opener at Buffalo, but hasn’t lost since though Fordham and Northeastern both took them to five sets. They get three matches this week when they host their tournament. UConn will arrive on Friday for a night match, and they get Rhode Island and Hartford the next day as well. ACC play starts up the week following.

University of Hartford Hawks (5-4 out of conference)

Hartford’s conference slate doesn’t start until October, so they’ve still got numerous out of conference games to play. They’ve won six straight sets coming off wins over Holy Cross and St. Francis (NY). They also will be in the Boston College tournament taking on Rhode Island on Friday, and Connecticut and Boston College on Saturday.

Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils (2-4 out of conference)

CCSU dropped 2, but picked up a win over Hartford in the tourney they hosted at home in New Britain, and then notched a win over Big East opponent Seton Hall at the Fordham tournament, though lost the other two games. Now if you want to see interesting volleyball can get in that regard, Seton Hall beat Buffalo, which beat Boston College, and CCSU beat Seton Hall. Does that mean CCSU can beat Boston College or Buffalo? Not necessarily by any means, but it’s interesting to see how the team’s interact and certainly why they play the games. CCSU spends their week at the Dartmouth tournament taking on Northeastern, Dartmouth, and fellow NEC team Sacred Heart, though apparently it is not an NEC game. Still the two teams sit atop the NEC standings so their meeting should be intriguing. Full fledged conference play starts September 23rd when Quinnipiac comes to town.

Quinnipiac University Bobcats (0-8 out of conference.)

QU’s team of course was resurrected following a legal battle late this summer likely causing an off court distraction, but on the court the team has won only one set however, that set was to an Ivy League team. They will be up at Army to participate in a tournament on friday, and then return to Hamden for their first home match to open up NEC play versus St. Francis (NY). Neither team has a win as I write this.

Yale University Bulldogs (4-1 out of conference.)

Yale won their first four matches of the year to teams from across the conferences, before Virginia Tech from the ACC picked up a win against them. This week Yale travels down to Seton Hall to take on Hofstra, NJIT, and an unpredictable Seton Hall team. Conference play doesn’t begin until October.

Sacred Heart University Pioneers (5-5 out of conference.)

The Pioneers went into last week with a 5-1 record and emerged from it with a .500 record following losses to NJIT, Seton Hall, Manhattan, and Fordham. They however picked up wins over Eastern Michigan, Army, Holy Cross, UM-KC, and Iona to start the season. They will also be at the Dartmouth Tournament this weekend and get their first look at CCSU. Conference play for them also begins in October.

Holy Cross Crusaders (1-7 out of conference.)

The Crusaders have faced a varied number of opponents from numerous conferences including the NEC, A10, and ACC, but did pick up a victory against Bryant only to go 0-2 in their home tournament this past weekend. They open league play in two weeks, but meanwhile face four games on the road at CCSU, and later at the Brown Tournament against three opponents.
