Women’s Hockey: Colgate 4, Quinnipiac 1

by David F.P.

Was going to go through goal by goal and penalty by penalty but admittedly some of the announcements got a little garbled towards the end. It started out as a fairly back and forth affair between the Colgate Raiders and Quinnipiac Bobcats at the TD Banknorth Center in Hamden, for one period, but in Period 2 and beyond Colgate managed to get the puck into the net to take the lead and gain the eventual win. The first goal came just a few minutes into the period when Marissa Dombovy scored, A face off in the QU end led to a goal by Beth Rotenberg and Katie Stewart scored with 7 seconds left in the 2nd to put the team up 3-0. Quinnipiac had picked up some penalties in Period 1 but survived them. Unfortunately in period 3 more penalties would interfere with their chances to rally. A few minutes into the period QU got called for a penalty. During the penalty kill they got called for another one leading to 50 seconds of 5 on 3 hockey. This would prove to be just too much and Dombovy scored again when a centering pass was served up perfectly to her. One of the penalties had expired by then but another QU player committed a penalty following the goal. The team had to fight through more 5 on 3 and then 5 on 4 but survived without giving up any more goals. When Colgate got called for a penalty a few minutes later it gave QU an opportunity and Elyse Cole took it, flicking the puck past the goaltender’s left shoulder and into the net to make it 4-1. That would be the last goal scored however and Colgate would pick up the win. Watching the plays go, the game did not look as lopsided as the score suggested. Quinnipiac got their opportunities too, but it just didn’t get in the net. Kimberly Sass for Colgate did a great job in net through letting only one shot by her the whole day. Quinnipiac goalie Tia Wishart also blocked a ton of difficult shots, and kept the game from getting completely out of hand. Colgate threatened several other times, but Wishart took care of it.
