As a snow storm swept towards New England, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights arrived in Lundholm Gymnasium on the UNH campus to take on the Wildcats.

UNH would win the day with a 191.575 as Rutgers put up a 185.275, but there was good news and bad news for both teams that afternoon. (Scores from Troester, meet was also watched online though this report will not serve as a retelling of the video coverage by any means.)

UNH put together a solid vault rotation with all six routines above 9.5 and Justine turner and Katie Caliendo both hitting 9.775s. Helena Diodati hit a 9.75, Diane Grey’s Luconi scored her a 9.7, and freshman Danielle Reibold hit her first vault of her first meet with a 9.65, of the scores that were counted.

Rutgers did not have a fun day on the Uneven Bars but Latara Northcutt picked up a 9.525, and Laura Sevarino a 9.25.

Things looked up for the Knights on Vault as they also had a solid rotation top to bottom. Sevarino’s 9.625 led the way with Northcutt and Kiah Banfield adding 9.6s, Maddie Zwiebel and Alyssa Lewandowski’s 9.525 were rest the counted scores.

UNH also had some struggles on bars with only 3 of 6 gymnasts scoring above a 9. The good news was that two of them had 9.7s as Grey and Reibold picked up 9.7s and Diodati scored a 9.45.

Though there were a few hiccups on Beam for the Wildcats but Chelsea Steinberg and Taryn LaFountain both picked up a 9.825, with Katie Caliendo scored a 9.6, Justine Turner a 9.525, and Reibold’s 9.125 closed out the five top scores.

Rutgers had an extremely tough day on Floor, which is uncharacteristic, as only Sevarino and Schwartz broke 9 in the scoring. There was a lot of falls, but one would think that might have been traditional first meet jitters.

The Scarlet Knights rebounded on the traditional treacherous beam and Sevarino picked up a 9.8, with Northcutt and Zwiebel both at 9.65, Johnson at 9.425, and Hartwig at 9.4. A pretty good bounce back considering the apparatus and the Floor troubles.

UNH closed out the meet on Floor with a bang as Taryn LaFountain grabbed the top score of the meet with a 9.85, followed by Julie Sauchuk’s 9.775, Keeley Smith and Turner both had 9.625s and Katie Caliendo got on the board with a 9.55.

It’s clear that both teams have foundations to build upon and both can go even higher. For Rutgers a more stable Floor Exercise, which is likely in their reach considering their history, will get the scores back up. Both teams would probably like to see their Bars scores go up too. There was a lot of release moves on both sides that didn’t connect, when they do, watch out the scores will shot upwards.
